The HDMI cable plugs into the adapter plug, but I removed the cable first before trying to remove the adapter plug. If there are locks on the adapter plug I’m not able to see where they’re located.

Lol, well at least it was an easy fix. Yes, DisplayPort has little clips that lock it in place so it doesn’t fall out, you need to press the “tab” to release those little clips/locks.
